ODA will be running a stand at Freshers' Fair, to give students the opportunity to find out about the opportunities we provide in volunteering overseas and encouraging debate about the issues surrounding development. We will also be advertising and recruiting for available committee positions.

Oxfam Talk: Water Sanitation

Jane Cocking, Deputy Humanitarian Director for Oxfam GB, discusses water and sanitation aid and will include a practical demonstration of building a “tippy-tap” (or a water tap stand).. Ms Cocking is head of operations in Pakistan and has had to deal extensively with water and sanitation policy. She presided over Oxfam’s relief effort following the earthquakes in Kashmir in the winter of 2005-6. She is a regular speaker at Oxford and should provide an excellent talk.

The talk will take place in Exeter's Sasketchewan Room.

Rachel Millward recently joined Five Talents in August 2007 as Development Director. She previously worked in the Credit Risk Management and Advisory Department of Goldman Sachs in London for 11 years. Rachel has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration with German from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.

A talk by Adrian Wood on 'Reducing international inequalities; opportunities and constraints'

Adrian Wood's profile:

Economist, educated at Cambridge and Harvard Universities. From 1969 to 1977, he taught at Cambridge, where he was a Fellow of King's College and a lecturer in the Faculty of Economics. From 1977 to 1985, he was a senior economist at the World Bank in Washington DC, working on China, Turkey and the 1980 World Development Report. From 1985 to 2000, he was a Professorial Fellow of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, and from 2000 to 2005 was Chief Economist of the UK's Department for International Development.

Oxford Development Abroad present a lecture by Prof FitzGerald, Director of QEH (Oxford Department of International Development) on DEVELOPMENT IN PRACTICE.

Prof FitzGerald is a world renowned academic specialising in development
macroeconomics and trade linkages between industrial and developing countries. He also has conducted advisory work for many agencies including UNICEF and the UN. Since October 2007 he has been the Director of the Department of International Development (QEH) here in Oxford.

This lecture provides a unique opportunity to hear this eminent academic speak on the issues of facing development work in today's world, and practical examples of how we might achieve results. A not to be missed event.

On Thursday of 7th Week (28th February) at 6pm Jane Cocking from Oxfam will be giving a talk on 'Water and Sanitation' including examples of Oxfam's work in developing countries and possibly a demonstration of 'tippy taps'.

Oxford Development Abroad are please to present a lecture on HEALTH ABROAD by world renowned author Jane Wilson-Howarth. This lecture will take place on Tuesday of 1st Week (22nd April) in Christ Church Lecture Room 1 beginning at 5.45 pm.

Jane Wilson Howarth is a qualified GP and has spent much of her life writing about travel health. She first graduated with a degree in ecology, and her interest in parasites and insects has continued to this day. She has lived for 11 years in Asia working for various health programmes. Jane has completed over 15 expeditions all over the world, and her experience about all things health related will be invaluable for all those that attend. She will give an illustrated talk on how to remain healthy whilst working and travelling abroad, and about the health challenges facing the populations of developing countries.

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Jane will be selling discounted copies of her famous book 'Bugs, Bites, and Bowels' at the end of the presentation.

Lord Robert May of Oxford

Lord May is a distinguished scholar, biologist, ecologist and epidemiologist. 
Among many other honorable positions, he has been appointed the President of The
Royal Society, President of the British Ecological Society, the Chief
Scientific  Advisor to the UK Government, a fellow at Harvard, Princeton and
Oxford and a  member of numerous scientific boards. He was awarded many
prestigious prizes,  awards and medals such as the Royal Swedish Academy of
Sciences Crafoord Prize  (1996) or the Blue Planet prize (2001).

Lord May will be presenting a lecture on

'PARASITES, PEOPLE AND POVERTY' 

The lecture was first given at the Broad institute of Harvard and MIT where it 
was very positively welcome. The lecture is aimed at three major killers in the
developing world - HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB, the diseases burden in low-income
countries and the main initiatives and effectivity of health campaigns in 
developing world.

The lecture takes place in Zoology Department on Wednesday 7/5/2008, Lecture
Theatre A at 9am.
The places are limited, so please make sure you arrive on time.

Alex Jacobs will be speaking on "The Case of the Asian tsunami: how good are NGOs?"

Founder of Mango (www.mango.org.uk), now respected as the leading supplier of finacial management services to international NGOs in the UK and abroad. He was also a founding trustee of Aid Workers Network (www.aidworkers.net), a highly innovative project that encourages peer-to-peer networking within the aid sector. Alex also sits on the board of BOND, the umbrella body for UK NGOs, and on Oxfam GB's audit committee.

potential volunteers with information about the projects we run. There will be a
chance to learn about what ODA does, an opportunity to ask questions and speak
to people who have been on projects before.

All presentations will be held at Wadham College, just come to the lodge and
there will be somebody there to direct you.

HIV Education in the developing world - Which strategies? What aims?

How can HIV Education help to alleviate the spread of HIV/AIDS in the developing world? And what strategies are the most effective ones? Should charities focus on prevention or treatment of HIV/AIDS? And should cost effectiveness be a measure?

Speakers include:
- Basil Eastwood, Founder of Cecily's Fund and the father of Cecily, in whose memory he and his wife established Cecily's Fund, former British Ambassador to Syria and Switzerland
- Winnie Ssanyu Sseruma, Christian Aid's HIV Mainstreaming Coordinator
- Alex Zdravkovic, Oaktree's Schools4Schools Programme Coordinator
- Nalini Asha, Oxford DPhil Candidate who works on translating HIV Education strategies in developing countries
